Enhancing your brand and image on the web

Why do I need a domain? What is the difference between a domain and a web site? What does a domain do for my business? We look at answering some of these questions here.

Why do I need a domain? A domain is the foundation of branding your own presence on the web. Sure, you can set up a presence on Facebook or You Tube, but you have very little control over that, especially when it comes to the experience your potential customers receive.

What is the difference between a domain and a web site? Firstly, one needs a domain – hosted with a domain registrar, and then one can build a website on top of that domain. So, for example, you register the domain xyz.com, and then can build a website www.xyz.com or support.xyz.com and publish those websites on the internet. It’s a bit like in the days of bricks and mortar retail only – what one needed initially was to rent or buy a property (the domain), and only then to put in things like shop fittings and fixtures (the website).

What does a domain do for my business? Well simply put, a domain provides you with the ability to build and publish a web site, as well as to have your own personalised email addresses (yourname@yourdomain.com) rather than something like yrcompname658@gmail.com
